Analyse des ressources et des caractéristiques individuelles du stock d'oursin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) du territoire 64 ArchiMer

A spatial sampling was carried out for stock assessment of sea urchin P. lividus throughout the Basque coast. A sampling, over the year, was conducted to study the reproductive cycle. This work took place over 2013 and 2014. Reproduction occurs once in spring, between May and August 2014. Among factors affecting the release of eggs, salinity, temperature and hydrodynamics show a significant inter-annual variability in the Basque coast. Thus, the period set in 2014, may fluctuate between years. For the stock, the results showed that 11.85 (+/-0.32) million individuals of harvestable biomass for 724 tones (+/- 137). Stock is spread over the entire surveyed area density and biomass decrease rapidly with depth, individuals are mainly located between 0 and 5 m....

BIGORNO. Biodiversité Intertidale sud Gascogne Observation et Recherche de Nouveaux Outils de surveillance et d'aide à la décision - Rapport fiinal ArchiMer

This report presents the results obtained during the BIGORNO project whose main objective is to overcome knowledge gaps on the biocenoses of the southern sub-region "Bay of Biscay" to propose a sampling protocol adapted to biogeographic and environmental specific conditions. A stratified random sampling design considering spatial heterogeneity has been implemented. Biodiversity was considered on 0.1 m²quadrats. These data have revealed the organization of benthic communities and the relevant taxa to be considered (species or assemblages of indicator species) in the context of establishing perennial monitoring of intertidal habitats. Proposals are made to implement the descriptors and indicators defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

During recent decades, works on rocky shore biodiversity have been multiplied in the southern part of the Bay of Biscay and more precisely on intertidal and subtidal area were communities present a great interest. Necessity of conservation of coastal habitats and their communities and a growing pressure on coastal environments explain awareness of services provided by these ecosystems. Those communities are very sensitive to water quality change. Moreover, since the beginning of the XXI century various European directives require a good ecological status of coastal waters and conservation of their communities : Water Framework Directive (WFD), Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and conservation of habitats with Directive Habitat Fauna and Flora...

Under the WFD monitoring, the intertidal macroalga parameter of the water body FRFC11 « coast Basque », two stations were sampled in 2015 from the appropriate protocol for this water body. The average of the two stations takes the water body in « Good ». Both stations get very similar results but are not classified in the same category: « Good » . The abundance of opportunistic species is the worst notation. The comparison with results for subtidal macroalgae is consistent. Also, for intertidal macroalgae on Spanich Basque waterbodies results are very similar.

In 2014, under the second cycle of WFD monitoring the "subtidal macroalgae" parameter is calculated on 3 stations of the “Basque coast” water body. Complementary metric have been obtained for the first time, as for all the Channel / Atlantic coast. Their aim is to optimize the information collected to assess the ecological status of water bodies. The calculation of the Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR) classify this water body as "Good" as in 2013 with a tendency to improve notation.

In 2013, under the WFD monitoring the "subtidal macroalgae" parameter is calculated on 3 stations of the “Basque coast” water body. The classification for this parameter is "good", and scores obtained are higher than the previous years. This observation is mainly based on the fact that deeper bathymetric levels were sampled and allowed to better characterize belts and associated communities. The effects of bad spring weather conditions on algae growth are not visible at the time of sampling. After these first three sampling campains improvements and additions to the protocol are proposed to provide information for European directives.

The assessment of the angiosperm quality element (Zostera noltei) for transitional water body (here, FRFT8 Bidassoa) considers the monitoring of 3 metrics: the taxinomic composition, the spatial bed extent and the abundance (percentage cover). In 2018, the angiosperm quality element for FRFT8 Bidassoa was “good” such as 2016 and 2017. This result is due to an increase of the spatial extent of seagrass bed compared to 2016. However, the spatial extent of seagrass continuously change, depending on climatic conditions of the year.

In 2020, the Zostera noltei seagrass bed monitoring, located on the transitional water body FRFT08 Bidassoa (Txingudi Bay, Hendaye - Pyrénées Atlantiques), was carried out from a grid of 30 sample points ("stationary" monitoring) and from a mapping within the framework of the WFD. The "angiosperms" indicator established on this water body is based on 3 metrics (composition, extent and abundance). In 2020, the calculation of this indicator classifies the water body in "Very good condition". This result is explained both by a significant increase in the seagrass bed surface area, from 1.9 ha in 2018 to 4.5 ha in 2020 and by a good abundance.
